A1: HappyCity has adopted the definition by author Charles Montgomery:
- Maximize joy and minimize hardship,
- Leads us toward health, rather than sickness,
- Offers us freedom to live, move, and build our lives as we wish,
- Builds resilience against economics and environmental shocks,
- Fair in the way it apportions space, services, mobility, joys, hardships, and costs, and
- Enables us to build and strengthens the bonds between friends, families, and strangers that give life meaning.
Q2: What is the GNH Index and how does HappyCity utllize it?
A2: The Gross National Happiness (GNH) is a concept founded in Bhutan to imply that sustainable development takes a holistic approach towards notions of progress and give equal importance to non-economic aspects of well-being. Furthermore, the GNH Index is a single number index developed under ten (10) domains and designed to create policy incentives for the government, NGOs and businesses. HappyCity utilizes the GNH Index categories to identify the strengths and needs of a community.
Q3: What is the involvement of the United Nations with happiness and well-being?
A3: On April 2, 2012, the Royal Government of Bhutan convened its inaugural UN's High-level Meeting on Happiness & Well-being to pursue the elaboration of additional measures that better capture the importance of our well-being with a view to guide public policies....click for more information. Since, the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 20 March, the International Day of Happiness recognizing the relevance of happiness & well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives. On March 20, 2015, HappyCity celebrated the official Day of Happiness in Los Angeles that included a signed Mayoral Proclamation that supports the measure of our happiness & well-being for public policy.
